Good timing. I remember watching a US senate filibuster. All I could think is how dumb is the USA. What positive outcome does it bring? I feel sorry for the person compiling the proceedings.

They must get "mind fornicated" listening to the pollie-waffle!

Thank goodness we don't have this degree of stupidity down-under

There are certainly bad actors in both parties, but right now only one is trying to overturn the elected will of the majority, take all covid precautions themselves while peddling lies to their viewers/members, deny the climate change right outside their windows, wage war on women's reproductive rights and, perhaps worst of all, actively attempting a coup against our own duly elected government. Whichever party gets and retains power will have a major impact on not just the US, but the entire world. Right now, only the Democrats are showing the desire to actually address the serious issues confronting us and the only way for that to succeed is to eliminate the filibuster. I'm old enough to remember when both parties would talk reasonably and reach a compromise. No longer. Republicans vote in lockstep with the Minority Leader to oppose anything the other side proposes, even when it was originally their own idea! Does the Affordable Care Act ring a bell here? We are badly broken after 4 years of Trump and I strongly believe the only way left for us now is to abolish the filibuster and vote like hell to add more Democrats to both Houses in order to increase our slim margin in the House of Representatives and take away the power of Manchin and Sinema in the Senate. As to the argument that abolishing the filibuster will backfire when the other party eventually gets the majority, does anyone doubt that one of the very first things they'll do is exactly that? If so, my response is..... Merrick Garland and Amy Coney Barrett and the Supreme Court. Nuff said.

At the end of the day, so much of this denial of democracy will lead to resistance from mostly the urban masses, largely people of color and their allies, and all serious political advocacy groups. Blatant attempts to return to Jim Crow/Apartheid and illegal abortions and the like, will not win the hearts and minds of the populace. That being said, the rise of the Proud Boys and other neo-fascist groups do feed off this kind of rhetoric. We should understand that the political divisions will likely get worse. Full disclosure, as a Marxist, I really don't have much confidence in either party. The Dems gave us their best and brightest (Obama) yet the wars continued, the banks were bailed out, Black Lives Matter emerged, massive deportations increased, and the gap between rich and poor intensified. What then is one to do? Reading Warren Swil's site is a start. Thank you, Warren!
